This presentation on "Gender and Disability in Visual Culture" is a historical review of images of disability in U.S. culture with a focus on how they have been informed by discourses of femininity and masculinity. A founding scholar of the field of Disability Studies in the Humanities, Dr. Garland-Thomson is Professor of Women's Studies at Emory University and has written several groundbreaking books on disability, including Extraordinary Bodies: Figuring Physical Disability in American Culture and Literature, Staring: How We Look, and Freakery: Cultural Spectacles of the Extraordinary Body, as well as over thirty articles on disability published in academic journals. The Utne Reader named her in its 2009 list of “50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World,” and the Society for Disability Studies recognized her with its 2010 Senior Scholar Award.
