Situated against a pervasive anti-obese cultural logic, an assumption that suggests bodies—especially thin and fit bodies—matter most and ought to be attained and maintained, this talk examines FatClub.com, a community whose discourse promotes a counter-intuitive cultural scene. This virtual ethnography explores how members of the community constitute an elaborate system of linguistic and embodied cultural performances. In addition to reinforcing our understanding of culture and community as complex and contextual phenomena, FatClub.com members’ practices compel us to (re)consider bodies and logics that often pass as common sense.
